Carrière du Boulonnais, France's largest open-pit quarry

The historical cradle of the CB Group
A family and heritage legacy of the CB Group, the Ferques site (62) is now the largest open-pit quarry in France (450 ha). Its massive limestone deposit, with reserves lasting more than 100 years, offers an annual production capacity of 7 million tons.
Carrières du Boulonnais has developed a network of four platforms in the Paris region to meet the growing needs of the local market. The first site in Mitry Mory was opened in 2000, close to the construction site of Roissy-Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.
Ferques, a historic site, limestone of excellence
The Ferques quarry began operations in 1896 with the artisanal exploitation of a marble quarry. In 1917, the site became the Marbres du Boulonnais company, then was renamed Carrières du Boulonnais in 1974.
This stage was marked by significant investment: the site was connected to the railway line and a material washing plant dedicated to products for the concrete industry was created.
Its deposit is a massive limestone formation from the Visean age (Lower Carboniferous period, approximately 325 million years ago).
High chemical quality, rich in calcium carbonate (CaCO3), it is highly sought after by manufacturers.
Behind the scenes of quarry operations
Before a quarry can be operated, an operating permit must first be obtained by prefectural decree. This is followed by seven stages, beginning with the preparation of the deposit by removing topsoil and sterile material to expose the limestone roof. These excavated materials are then stored for use in the redevelopment of the quarry. Next, blasting is carried out to break up and remove the rock face.
The Ferques quarry manufactures its own explosives and, with its blasting experts, carries out two to three blasts per day to extract up to 35,000 tons of rock daily. This highly sensitive operation is subject to strict safety protocols and rigorous administrative monitoring.
The stones are then loaded and transported by dump trucks to the processing facilities to be used in the manufacture of various materials. The manufacturing process consists of several stages : crushing ( fragmentation or grinding), screening (for material classification), and handling by conveyor belts.
The aggregates obtained are then transported either to storage areas by truck or to silos at the recomposition plant, where they are mixed according to our customers' specific recipes.
Sales are made automatically into the hopper in the transport container destined for the end customer.
The site has a large storage capacity of 400,000 tons.
The Ferques quarry is also equipped with a unique, high-performance washing facility. This facility produces a unique washed sand with a grain size of 0/4 mm and 7% fines, as well as washed gravel that meets the requirements for concrete applications and civil engineering structures.

The circular economy at the heart of our environmental commitment
Our model is based on the recovery of construction and public works waste, returns from ready-mix concrete plants, and the marketing of alternative materials to natural aggregates, thereby contributing to sustainable construction and environmental preservation.
From Ferques, platforms inthe Ile-de-France region andOise, we organize the collection of excavated material for subsequent recycling.
Our range is formulated using a short supply chain based on local resources for local use in the concrete industry and public works.
